Focus and Scope
The aim of the The Canadian Geographer (TCG) / Le Géographe canadien (LGC) is to publish original writing of the highest quality and to promote the remarkable diversity of methodological and substantive interests that comprise contemporary Geography. TCG / LGC is the leading voice of Canadian Geographers and their research on Canada and elsewhere. TCG / LGC also encourages submissions from geographers around the globe. The Canadian Geographer / Le Géographe canadien depends on rigorous, peer reviewed evaluations, high quality publishing and a world-wide distribution. The Canadian Geographer / Le Géographe canadien is dedicated to enhancing the goals of the Canadian Association of Geographers.

La mission du Géographe canadien est de publier des textes originaux de haute valeur scientifique sur des sujets susceptibles d'intéresser les géographes et les érudits dans des champs disciplinaires connexes à travers le monde. Les sujets de nature philosophique, théorique et méthodologique provenant de diverses régions du globe sont privilégiés ainsi que des travaux réalisés par des géographes canadiens et des études concernant le Canada et d'autres régions du monde.
Section Policies
Research Articles
For editorial purposes, submissions are classified as Human Geography, Physical Geography or Geographic Information Science and are published in English or French. Research articles must report original and previously unpublished research or a development of a theory or technique that significantly extends knowledge within Geography. Research articles must be accompanied by abstracts in both English and French. Authors should limit the length of Research Articles to 5,000 to 15,000 words of text, including all text, tables, and illustrations. Special issues of Research Articles that focus on a selected theme may be published occasionally. The advice of the editor should be sought before undertaking a special issue.
Focus Essay
Focus essays consist of a guest-edited selection of timely and original research reports that relate to a common theme or distinct specialization. The length of Focus Essays should be limited to 5000 words, including all text, tables, and illustrations. Those persons interested in organizing a submission are requested to describe their plans with the editor.
Review Essays
Review essays are intended to provide an organized critical synthesis of information on an important topic. Readers are invited to submit manuscripts that interpret and evaluate the underlying themes from a current body of related literature or that review critically one or a number of major works in ways that go beyond the normal book review. Review essays should be no more than 4,000 words, including all text, tables, and illustrations. The advice of the editor should be sought before a reader undertakes a review essay.
Book Reviews
Book reviews are commissioned by the review editor to review individual books of importance to Canadian readership. Readers willing to undertake reviews are invited to send to the review editor a statement of the subject area(s) of interest to them. Unsolicited reviews may be accepted for publication, subject to external assessment.
Canadian Landform Examples
Canadian Landform Examples present succinct explanatory descriptions for teaching use or for raising research questions in geomorphology. Canadian Landform Examples should be limited to 3000 words, including all text, tables, and illustrations. The advice of the Canadian Landform Example editor should be sought before a reader prepares a submission.
Canadian Urban Landscapes
Canadian Urban Landscapes explore issues in the Canadian urban environment by offering interpretive perspectives on Canadian urban landscapes. Canadian Urban Landscape Examples should be limited to 3000 words, including all text, tables, and illustrations. The advice of the Canadian Urban Landscapes editors should be sought before a reader prepares a submission.
Commentaries
Commentaries present a response to published articles or an editorial or scholarly opinion. Commentary articles are generally shorter essays, but longer manuscripts may be published after discussion with the editor. Commentaries should be limited to 1000 words or less. Commentaries are published at the discretion of the editor and they are peer reviewed by the editor and two editorial board members.
Obituaries
Obituaries published in The Canadian Geographer conform to policies established by the CAG executive. For further information on obituaries, contact the editor.
